006 Eurasian Spoonbill

The Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalia lucorodia) is a large-sized, 70-95 cm, pure white bird with a distinctively spatulate bill. It has wide but fragmented breeding range extending from Europe to northwest Africa, the Red Sea, India and China. Its habitat consists of fresh and saltwater marshes, swamps, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and deltas. The breeding pairs build platform-like nests of twigs, sticks and other vegetation in colonies in dense vegetation, reeds or trees 3 to 5 meters above the ground on small islands in water bodies. The birds live and migrate in flocks of around 100 individuals.
