033 Cotton Pigmy Goose

The Cotton Pigmy Goose (Nettapus coromandenialus), also called Cotton Teal, is the smallest water fowl on earth at 26 cm length and only 160 g body weight. Breeding male has glossy blackish-green crown, black collar, green wings, short blackish bill, short blackish legs, and white rounded head, neck and underparts. The birds are resident breeders in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. They nest in hollows of tree trunks near freshwater bodies during the south-west monsoon. The female lays a clutch of 6-12 ivory white eggs. This almost entirely aquatic species feeds largely on aquatic vegetation.
