031 Little Grebe

The Little Grebe or Dabchick (Tachybaptus ruficollis) is 23-29 cm long dumpy little water bird. It appears all black from a distance, but it has chestnut brown patch on the throat and side of the neck, pale brown flanks, nearly white rear end, and yellow ‘gape’ marks at the corners of the bill. The birds are found across Europe, Asia, and much of Africa. They are accomplished divers primarily feeding on fish.
