009 Asian Openbill

The Asian Openbill (Anastomus oscitans) is 76-81 cm long stork with pale grey plumage that turns white in breeding season. It has glossy black wings, a tail with green or purple sheen, pinkish-grey open bill formed by a hollow in the lower mandible, and long red legs. It is resident breeder found in freshwater marshes, rice fields, and wetlands of the tropical southern Asia. The species is seen in groups foraging particularly for snails in inland water bodies. They nest in large colonies, sometimes building as many as 40 nests in one large tree.
