040 River Tern

The River Tern (Stema aurantia), also known as the Indian River Tern, is 38-43 cm long bird. It has dark grey upperparts, white underparts, yellow bill, red legs, and black cap in breeding season that turns grayish white otherwise. It is exclusively a freshwater resident breeder found along the inland rivers across Iran, the Indian Subcontinent, Myanmar and Thailand. They nest on difficult to access sandbanks in river; the female usually lays three greenish-grey eggs.
