032 Common Coot

The Common Coot (Fulica atra), also known as Eurasian Coot or Coot, is 32-42 cm long bird with over all black plumage, whitish facial shield and snowy white bill and legs. Its habitat is vegetated swamps and lagoons across much of the Old World. It is an omnivore and feeds on vegetable matter as well as insects, small fish, and worms. In times of food shortages, it can be very brutal to its chicks sometimes even biting them to death to stop them begging for food. It is an aggressive bird and during the breeding season the pair defends its territory vigorously. Coots often seize nests of ducks for roosting and push away the original owner’s eggs in water.
