052 Purple Moorhen

The Purple Moorhen (Porphino porphino) has many names – Purple Swamphen, Purple Gallinute, Purple Coot, Sultana Bird, African Purple Swamphen, and Pukeko. It is about 47 cm long bird with purple-blue plumage, red frontal shield, red thick bill, and long red legs. It is widely found in the swamps of Asia, Africa,Australia, Europe, and New Zealand. Several females of the species lay eggs in a communal nest; such a nest may contain more than 12 eggs with each female laying 3-6 eggs.
