048 Bar-tailed Godwit

The Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica) is 37-41 cm long large wader. While in breeding plumage its neck, breast and belly are unbroken brick red, but otherwise off white. It has a slightly upward curved long bill and blue-grey legs. Its barred tail distinguishes it from Black-tailed Godwit. It breeds in Scandinavia, Alaska, and northern Asia. It is a great migratory bird flying non-stop the longest distances than any other bird in the world. In one instance, a specific female Bar-tailed Godwit was recorded to fly non-stop a distance of 11,026 kilometres from Alaska to New Zealand.
