014 Indian Pond Heron

The Indian Pond Heron (Ardeola grayii) is 39-45 cm long elegant bird. It is stocky with short neck, short thick bill, white-grey plumage, buff-brown back, coloured or streaked foreneck and breast, and legs that change colour from green to bright-yellow during the breeding season. It is found across most of the Indian Subcontinent. They build colonies of nests in trees near lakes and rivers and the individuals return to the same colony year after year.
