017 Oriental Darter

The Oriental Darter or Indian Darter (Anhinga melanogaster), also known as Snakebird, is 80-100 cm long species in the darter family of water birds. It has a long brown neck with crown, upper back black with brown edges, under parts blackish brown, a pale line over the eye and throat, a line running along the sides of the neck, dark grey legs and webbed feet, and a long sharp bill. It is a resident breeder mainly found in the fresh water bodies of most of South and Southeast Asia. The birds swim singly or in small groups with entire body submerged in water and only the head and long curved neck showing above the water giving snake=like appearance.
