509 Rose-ringed Parakeet

The Rose-ringed Parakeet or Ring-necked Parakeet (Psittacula kramen) is about 40 cm long including tail feathers. It is bright green with a yellow wash on its under parts, wings, and tail which has a blue central feather. The adult male is distinguished by its red neck-ring; but it is either absent in the female and immature birds or present as a dull grey ring. The birds have a red hooked beak with a black tip. They are resident breeders in Asia and Africa. For centuries, they are taken as pets due to their ability to learn human speech and mimic other voices around them.
